February’s featured singers

Belgian singer Ariane first found fame with the group Les 10/20 before going solo.

Despite recording some top-notch tunes, the blonde chanteuse has remained largely overlooked in the history of francophone femme pop. But her story – and her back catalogue – deserves an urgent reappraisal.

Best known for her 1950s hits, British singer Lita Roza also returned to the studio in the 1960s and cut some great material.

German singer Heidi Franke’s career stalled when she mixed pop with politics and found herself banned from the radio.

Polish-born Goldie (Genya Zelkowitz) moved to New York with her family in 1947. Fifteen years later she formed Goldie and the Gingerbreads.

The group came to London shortly afterwards and recorded this track for the Decca label in 1965. The song became a hit, reaching number 25 in the UK charts in March that year.
